Citeability by Ask Hercules
Adds the five Citeability checks (Schema, Pillar, Internal Links, External Citations, Social Echo) to your WordPress editor. Requires WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 8.0+.
What’s new in 1.2.0: posts and pages no longer go to Draft when they fail a check. Publishing is never blocked by default, and live content always stays live.

A simple, step-by-step guide to updating the Citeability plugin. Read it here, or download the Word version to keep or print.
Download the guide (.docx)Why did my posts go to Draft?
The Citeability plugin checks every post before it goes live, to make sure it is easy for AI helpers (like ChatGPT) to find and quote. An older setting called Hard block made the plugin quietly move any post that failed the checks back to Draft — even when you were just fixing a word on a page that was already live. That is what you saw on your website, and the new plugin version fixes it.
Step 1: Download the zip file
- Click the green “Download the plugin (.zip)” button above.
- Your computer will save a file called citeability-by-ask-hercules.zip (usually in the Downloads folder).
Step 2: Open your WordPress admin and go to Plugins
- Go to your website and add /wp-admin at the end of the address (for example: yoursite.com/wp-admin).
- Type in your username and password, then click Log In.
- On the left side menu, click Plugins.
- Click the Add New button at the top, then click Upload Plugin.
Step 3: Choose the zip and install it
- Click Choose File (it may say Browse), find the zip you downloaded, and pick it.
- Click Install Now and wait a few seconds.
- When you see “Plugin installed successfully,” click Activate Plugin.
- If an older copy of the plugin was already there, this new one replaces it — your settings stay the same.
Step 4: Pick Soft warn in the settings
- On the left side menu, click Settings, then Citeability.
- Next to the word Mode, click the circle next to “Soft warn (default).”
- Click Save Changes at the bottom.
- Soft warn means the plugin still checks your posts, but it only shows friendly warnings — it never stops anything from publishing.
Step 5: Publish your stuck posts and pages again
- On the left side menu, click Posts (or Pages).
- Open each item marked Draft and click the blue Update button (it may say Publish). Now it goes live.
Step 6: Check that it worked
- Open a new browser tab and go to your website.
- Find one of the posts you just published — you should see it on your site.
- If a post says Published but you can’t see it on your site, wait a minute or two and refresh, or clear your browser’s cache.
What you will see in the editor
When you write or edit a post, the Citeability plugin adds a small panel called Citeability. It shows five checks:
- Schema Gate
- Pillar Gate
- Internal Links
- External Citations
- Social Echo
A green check mark means the check passed. A red X means it failed — with Soft warn on, you can still publish. The checks are there to help your writing get found and quoted by AI helpers like ChatGPT.
